Program of Greek Language and Culture'08

The General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad is organizing again this year in Greece the “Program of Greek Language and Culture” for 130 youths (ages of 18 to 25) of the Greek Diaspora from Oceania, Latin America and South Africa. The program will take effect from 6 January 2008 until 27 January 2008 (21 days in total).

The program aims to improve knowledge and use of the Greek language and reinforce Greek cultural identity for youth of Greek descent. Moreover, the program is meant to develop ties of friendship among youths of Greek descent and youths living in Greece.

The cost for participating in the program as well as accommodation will be covered by the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad. Air transport (to and from Greece) will be covered by the participants in the program.

Some of the activities include:

1. Εducation

1. Courses in the Greek language and literature in collaboration with the University of Athens
2. Lectures by experts on several matters (interpretation will be provided)
3. Workshops for traditional dances, theatre and music.

2. Excursions:

1. Excursions in Nafplio, Mycenae, Delphi, Galaxidi, Meteora, Dion and Thessaloniki
2. Visits to archaeological sites and museums
3. Visits to cultural and youth organisations

Participating in all the activities of the program is compulsory through all the duration of the program.

Eligibility for participation:

- At least one of the parents should be of Greek descent

- The age of the young people should be between 18 and 25 (they must have turned 18 before the start of the program)

- Participants should be permanent overseas residents

- Participants should not have been in any such program in the past.

Greek public servants posted outside of Greece or their children, as well as people living temporarily abroad cannot participate in the program.

Deadline and where to apply:

Those interested should get and submit their application forms at the Greek Embassy or Consulate of their area. The deadline of participation is set for 20 November 2007.
