Eyes
Fixed on the Athens Cathedral
The ballot for the election of the new Archbishop of Athens and
all Greece has been underway since 0900 hours at the Athens Cathedral.
The closed session is being attended by the Education Minister,
Evrypidis Stylianidis. The Bishops-delegates number 75, as Bishop
of Kilkission, who, being the senior, should have chaired the voting
process, did not turn up. The Bishop of Karystia is now presiding
over the ballot. The first two voting sessions require an absolute
majority, while the third requires a relative one, meaning that
even a single ballot can elect the new Archbishop. In the event
of a tie, the new Archbishop will emerge from a draw. The informal
candidates, since there are no official candidacies and ballot
papers, are four: the Bishops of Sparta, Thebes, Thessaloniki and
Demetrias. Should there be no objections, the process will be completed
at 1700 hours on Thursday evening. Prior to the elections, it has
to be made certain that at least the two thirds of the acting Bishops
are present.

Aegean Air
New Destinations for 2008
Aegean is expanding its network
with the start of the new summer 2008 flight schedule in three
ways. From 15 May onwards Aegean will be flying twice
a day to and from London and back using the brand
new 195-seater Airbus A321 whose cabins have been comfortably divided
into economy and business class. These aircraft also offer an in-flight
entertainment system. Thanks to this move Aegean will cover the
most popular destination abroad, and in overall 6 of the
7 largest destinations abroad from Athens. New
flights to Lemnos and Kefalonia. When the summer schedule
starts Aegean will also start flying to and from Lemnos. From
30 March onwards the company will fly 4 times a week, while from
1 May onwards Athens and Lemnos will have daily flights. To
improve Greece- Cyprus connections Aegean intends to start flying
from Heraklion and Rhodes to Larnaca. During the summer there
will be flights between Larnaca, Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion
and Rhodes with an average of 6 flights per day.
Latest on Olympic Airways Privatisation
Greece’s
government will establish a committee of ministers this week and
hire advisers in order to find a buyer to keep the indebted
Olympic Airlines flying. Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis will
head the committee of ministers to coordinate the effort "with
the aim of finding a viable solution for a new healthy Olympic
Air by the end of 2008," he announced yesterday after
meeting with Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis.
Ancient Olympia: Green Again
Greece approved an emergency plan to plant thousands of trees
at the fire-ravaged birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, hoping
to restore vegetation the at site in time for the Beijing 2008
flame-lighting ceremony on March 24. "Planting will start
in the next few days," said Maria Mathioudi, general secretary
of Greece’s National Agricultural Research Foundation, which
drew up the plan. "There will be teams working day and night,
we have to meet the deadline." The replanting will cost €2.7
million, to be covered by a donation from the John
S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.
The
road to Greece is hosted every Saturday evening from 4-6 pm
on 90.7 SYN fm by a young Greece born Melbournian called Thanasi
Giamalidis. By bringing together the best of today's Greek
music thanks to Kosta K and Dimitraxx along with weekly cd
and concert ticket giveaways the Road to Greece brings an experience
to the listener like never before. It takes them to Greece
and back.
The show is aimed at providing a show for the youth in the Greek community by
allowing them to keep in touch with the culture, music, and local traditions
by combining all of those qualities and throwing them into the weekly show.
With segments such as "ancient giveaway" where
the host asks a question that relates to the history of Greece in
order for the winner to get a prize and also "peter the painter's
quote of the week" where an old Greek man is saying things in
English with a heavy Greek accent, it relates to a lot of the listeners
and makes it easier to enjoy and understand the show, with of course
the main aspect being the love for the music and the giveaways. With
this in mind, the show is only on a trial basis with 90.7 SYN fm
and is trying to get all the support it can. Log onto www.myspace.com/theroadtogreece for
more information on the show or just simply listen every Saturday
from 4-6 on 90.7 SYN fm.
