“Oh, really, your parents are Greek?”, I hear the waitress from the local taverna ask me; and I try not to laugh at her lack of awareness about the Greek migrant communities all across the globe.

Here I am, on the ‘other side of the world’, and for a moment I had to yet again question my identity. Was I Australian, or was I Greek? Or was I something in between? I guess the answer isn’t that clear cut, and thus the reason for my ‘return’ to the spiritual homeland as I hoped to clear those restless thoughts.

A little more about me though before I continue on with my travel adventures and the lessons that come along with them. I’m a young Greek Australian woman in her early twenties, who recently decided to reverse the migratory pattern experienced by our forefathers, and with a  βαλίτσα in hand (ok maybe I had two suitcases and a lot of duty free shopping!)  I headed back up north to our place of origin...

This time though I was catching a flight, albeit a long one, as opposed to my parents who sailed over a month to get to Australia on the ‘Patris’. I’m sure they’d never thought they’d still be there nearly 40 years later…

Anyway, got a job, found a place to live, made some friends, and here I am, ready to take you along on the day to day experiences I encounter as I adjust into a new way of life and a new tempo.

As she came over and I was about to start rambling my standard Greek taverna order to her - you know, souvlaki, patates tiganites, xoriatiki salata – I couldn’t help myself from asking her in a cheeky tone ‘mipos exete mit pais me sos?’

You should’ve seen the look on her face!

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis Congratulates New Cypriot Leader

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis in a letter of congratulations sent to president–elect of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, stressed, among other things, the following: "I am sure your election (as president of the Republic of Cyprus ) will give a new impetus to the long-lasting efforts of Cypriot Hellenism to bring about the termination of the Turkish occupation, in the framework of a comprehensive and mutually acceptable, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem … Greece will continue to support the&n bsp; Republic of Cyprus in its efforts to implement the Agreement of July 8, 2006 and the recommencement of negotiations at the earliest."

Greek design of 2 Euro Coin The design submitted by the Bank of Greece, the work of sculptor George Stamatopoulos, has been chosen for the commemorative two-euro coin to be issued by all Eurozone countries in 2009 to mark the 10-year anniversary since the circulation of euro. The winning design was announced by the European Commission on Monday and was chosen by EU citizens through an Internet vote.

The Patras Carnival, Patrino karnavali is the largest event of its kind in Greece and the biggest in Europe. It has more than 160 years of history. The events begin on 17 January and last up to Clean Monday. The carnival of Patras is not a single event but a variety of events that includes balls, parades, hunting of hidden treasure, kids’ carnival etc. Its apogee is in the last weekend of Carnival with the Saturday evening parade of carnival groups, the extravagant Sunday parade of floats and groups, and finally the ritual burning of king carnival at the St. Nikolaos Street wharf in the harbour of Patras. Its characteristics are spontaneity, improvisation, inspiration and volunteerism.
