National Independence Day Parade
25th March is a day of celebration, commemorating Greece’s
historic struggle for national independence in the 1800s. There
will be a procession led by students of the Greek Orthodox Community
Afternoon & Saturday Schools and culminating in a wreath-laying
ceremony, poetry readings and traditional dancing. Parade commences
12 noon from Pyrmont Bridge
Courtesy of our Principal Sponsor, ANT1 Pacific, Giorgios
Lianos will perform on both nights, showcasing the newest in Greek music.
Also from Greece, the Mytilinian Municipal
Orchestra will perform
around 4pm on Saturday evening.
Local talent will also feature on this weekend, and both nights
at Darling Harbour will close with a very special DJ set by Krazy
Kon that will keep the crowd dancing late into the night.
The Darling Harbour celebration will kick off the two-month-long
Greek Festival of Sydney, with over 25 events scheduled on this
year’s program. -www.greekfestivalofsydney.com.au
No Meat Pies in Athens - Greek City
Exclusive Blog
Making my way through the Saturday morning traffic of locals and
tourists at Μοναστηράκι,
I babble on to my sister in English. I seemed to confuse the stallholder
of which one I was, a tourist or a local. I greet him Καλημέρα in
Greek, and we find common ground as he makes me laugh saying we
don’t say Καλημέρα anymore,
we say Καλομοίρα!
It was then I realised, that four days after Καλομοίρα’s
win to take Greece to the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, she was
still the talk of the town. It made me smile to think that although Καλομοίρα’s “Secret
Combination” was a mystery to the Greek locals, she has against
all odds, gotten to the center of the heart of a nation where everyone
has criticism at hand!
Why I think she’s cracked the code? Well trashy afternoon
show statistics tell me, that Καλομοίρα received
180.000 votes, Κώστας Μαρτάκης 56.000
and Χρύσπα 31.000 votes.
The day after the Eurovision contest, a co-worker walked by and
said “Did you see, your “cousin” won last night”!
As silly as his joke may have been, I see that my peculiar accent
and sincere attitude connect me with the likes of Καλομοίρα.
The stereotypical view of children of the diaspora, “ομογενείς” as
we’re called, is that they are innocent, pure, naive and
easy to take advantage of. Albeit, a lot of us come to Greece and
are perceived this way, we feel intimidated by the language barrier
and all the upfront “Greekness”. I urge you, and I
remind myself not to get trapped by this stereotype. Καλομοίρα is
one example of many that has turned the tables on such a perception
and used it to her advantage. 180.000 Greeks have evidently fallen
victim to the allure of this stereotype, the innocent, honest and
down to earth reality of ομογενείς kids.
Comments like “When is Καλομοίρα going
to learn Greek” are words of bitter old newsreaders (cough
cough “Καλημέρα Ελλάδα”),
when instead the more streetwise Greek will send an SMS or two
to support the energy and freshness that Καλομοίρα represents
for us all. On that note Καλό –Μήνα!
Bring Cash to Visit Greece
Tourist vacationing in Greece for two weeks
will need to show Greek authorities at the airport that the are
bringing at least 700 euros cash with them.
According to a new interior ministry decision published in the Government
Gazette on December 31, all non-European Union nationals
travelling to Greece must show that they have in their possession
at least 50 euros for each day they plan to stay in the country,
or a minimum of 300 euros for up to five days. Non-EU minors
travelling to Greece must show they have at least 25 euros per
day.
Greece abolishes the inheritance tax!
The government
of Greece has taken a very bold step forward by abolishing (in
effect) the tax which the vast majority of heirs have to pay in
order to obtain ownership over the assets of a deceased person.
The new law is effective from 1-1-2008, (in some cases from 13
December 2007), and results in a maximum rate of inheritance tax
of 1% for relatives of the deceased who inherit properties (real
estate) located in the territory of Greece.
All heirs are divided by the new law in three categories, A, B and C. The first
category (Category A) includes a) the surviving spouse of the deceased, b) the
children of the deceased c) the grandchildren, and d) the parents of the deceased.
