Greek owned Fleet Booms
NEW figures from the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee show
a an increase in the number of vessels controlled by Greek interests
of nearly 13% and of over 19% in terms of deadweight and gross
tonnage. The figures, prepared from Lloyd’s Register – Fairplay
data, show that Greek interests control 4,173 vessels of various
categories, of 260,929,221 dwt and 154,599,274 gt. These figures
include 1,054 newbuildings.
Greek interests continue to control
the largest share of the world fleet and are particularly strongly
represented in the tanker and bulk carrier sectors.
The newbuildings
comprise125 oil tankers, 273 chemical & products
tankers, 38 liquid gas carriers, 487 ore & bulk carriers, 63
pure container carriers, 49 cargo ships, 13 other ships and 6 passenger
ship.
Athens Grinds to a halt Public transportation workers
in Athens held a three-hours work stoppage, thus completely paralising
traffic in Athens, Greek media reported. Metro, Kifissia-Piraeus
electric railway workers, as well as tram, ETHEL buses and Proastiakos
suburban railway employees all stopped working from noon to 3pm
so as to show their protest against the draft law proposing changes
in the pension system, put forward by the Greek government, Greek
Kathimerini daily reported.
Meanwhile, a rally was held in front
of Greek Parliament.
On March 12 lawyers and engineers in Greece started their own
48-hour strike. They would be followed by bank employees, who would
start a two-day strike on March 13, Kathimerini daily said. The
strikes in Greece, led by the two trade union blocs in the country,
Greek General Confederation of Labour (GSEE) and the Supreme Administration
of Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions (ADEDY), are expected to reach
their highest point on March 19, for when GSEE and ADEDY have scheduled
a 24-hour general strike.

Soccer-Greece call up Seitaridis for Portugal
friendly Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has recalled Atletico Madrid
defender Giuourkas Seitaridis to his squad for the friendly match
against Portugal in Duesseldorf, Germany, on March 26.
Leaders of Cyprus' two communities to meet on
March 21 Cyprus' new President Demetris Christofias and Turkish
Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet on March 21 to restart
the stalled peace process, a U.N. spokesman said Wednesday.
The date was set during a meeting between Presidential Commissioner
George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot leader's adviser Ozdil Nami
at the office of the U.N. Secretary General's Special Representative
in Cyprus, Michael Moller.
At its March meeting the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)
lifted interest rates by 0.25% from 7.00% to 7.25%. The
RBA continues its focus on inflation, which is a key reason
for the rate rise.
The current market expectation is for rates to be on hold
until at least May. However this will depend on forthcoming
inflation figures.
The Economy grew by 3.9% over the course of last year,
which is a very strong result considering the upward movement
in interest rates. This is at the high end of the RBA’s
(3-4%) target range for economic growth.
The Australian Dollar peaked at 0.9490 on the back of speculation
of a 50 basis point rate rise but quickly fell back to
0.9320 when the 0.25% hike was announced. The ever widening
gap between interest rates here and in the U.S, as well
as the continuing resources boom fuelled mostly by Asia
put together a good argument for the aussie dollar to keep
rising against the U.S.
Gold is at US$986.92, which is slightly lower than the
record high set yesterday at US$995.
Oil prices have also hit an all time high at over USD$110.00
per barrel.
